Gamma Delta

University of Kansas

Mar 25th, 1950

Founding Date

When more than two hundred Alpha Phis sat down at the installation banquet for Gamma Delta chapter in the beautiful Student Union building at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, on the night of March 25, there were among them more than a few who looked at one another and said “Can you believe it’s really happening?”

There were thirty-seven collegiate and five alumnae initiates, lovely in their white formals, charter members of Gamma Delta, who had been initiated that morning with Margaret Coshun Hutchison (Psi-South Dakota) herself conducting the ceremony.

There were not one, not two, but four national officers present to grace the occasion--International President Margaret Hutchinson, Director of Finance Edna Rattray McGuire (Beta-Northwestern), Director of Extension Kathryn McCahan Hebgen (Kappa-Stanford) and Secretary-Treasurer Doris Corbett (Beta-Northwestern).

Sponsor and adviser for the new chapter, Margaret Stansbury Stockton (Psi-South Dakota), presided as toastmistress. Thirty members of the Nu (Nebraska) chapter came from Lincoln, Nebraska to take charge of initiation services.

The Upsilon chapter was present to conduct the model chapter meeting Sunday morning, lending their help as they had all during the establishment and new member period of Gamma Delta.
