Zeta Gamma

Santa Clara University

Nov 13th, 1976

Founding Date

Alpha Phi was the first international sorority on the campus of the University of Santa Clara. Zeta Gamma chapter’s initiation took place on November 13, 1976, and twenty-two new members were welcomed into Alpha Phi. Inspiration week was truly an exciting time. A week of projects and fraternity education programs ended with an overnight at the Beta Psi chapter house where songs and skits lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Initiation took place the following morning with many Beta Psi’s, Palo Alto alumnae and International officers taking part. Other area chapters were represented by collegians from Lambda (UC Berkeley) and Epsilon Gamma (Sacramento State). Cindy Maley, president of Beta Psi, conducted the initiation ceremony and the model meeting that followed. Immediately following initiation, everyone enjoyed a delicious brunch at the Beta Psi house. The Zeta Gammas had a few hours to catch up on lost sleep before they greeted parents and friends at a special mass held in the Santa Clara Mission. After the mass, a reception was held at Benson Parlors on campus, where the Dean of Students welcomed the new chapter to the university. Final greetings were given by Nancy Tucker Arneson (Nu-Nebraska), Director of Chapters West; Sue Riley, Director Governor X South, and Marcella Coffee, special adviser. Then it was off to Lou’s Village for the initiation banquet, which had been planned by Corlista Ann Wondershi Zolezzi (Tau-Oregon). Nancy Arneson was toastmistress. Words of welcome were given to the new chapter by Partick Carroll, S.J., faculty adviser; Sue Riley; Cindy Maley, president of Beta Psi; Margaret Kavalaris, president of Lambda, and Marilyn Biddle Rey (Beta Upsilon-Oregon State), State Alumnae Chairman. The response was given by Marilyn Morici, president of the Zeta Gamma chapter. The main address was given by Constance Purkiss Kelly (Beta Delta-UCLA), Vice President Alumnae. Marcella Coffee introduced the collegiate initiates. Sally McCall Grant (Gamma-DePauw), District Alumnae Chairman North, presented the gifts, and Kennetha Friday Richards (Rho-Ohio State), Zeta Gamma chapter adviser, accepted them for the chapter. The loving cup ceremony was then conducted by Kathryn Lucas Portwood (Theta-Michigan), District Governor X North, and a night to remember had come to a close.
