Delta Pi

Indiana State University

May 9th, 1964

Founding Date

The Delta Pi chapter of Alpha Phi was added at Indiana State on May 8 through 10.

Events of the installation weekend began with an inspirational evening on Friday held in the newly furnished chapter suite in Pickerl Hall. Sara Ann Wheeler Hatton (Omicron-Missouri), director of programs, spoke.

On Saturday morning the initiation ceremony was conducted by DePauw (Gamma), at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church for forty-one collegiates and twenty-five alumnae sponsors.

That evening Sara Ann Hatton presented the chapter charter at the installation ceremony.

The theme for the banquet which followed at the Terre Haute House was an original song, “Delta Pi of Alpha Phi,” written by Mrs. Ralph Mills, alumnae initiate. Mary Lou Woods (Beta Tau-Indiana), was toastmistress for the evening. Speakers included Mrs. Raleigh Holmstedt, representing her husband, president of the college; Dean of Women Florence Thompson; Doris R. Corbett (Beta-Northwestern), executive secretary-treasurer, and local Terre Haute alumnae.

Others in attendance at the installation were Ede Barnes (Beta Alpha-Illinois), field secretary; Iris Kaufmann Lerch (Gamma-DePauw), director of alumnae; Virginia Hudson Wagner (Gamma-DePauw), governor of District IV; Jane Weaver Pyle (Rho-Ohio State), alumnae chairman of District IV; Sondra Campbell Bowers (Beta Tau-Indiana), state alumnae chairman, and Ruth Bachman House (Gamma Epsilon-Lake Forest), collegiate secretary.

Sunday brought church attendance at St. Stephens in the morning followed by a model meeting conducted by DePauw (Gamma), and a reception for 350 initiates and well-wishers.
