Schmitz showed how to break up chapter cliques into
process or tradition serving a purpose today? We need to

members a chance to contribute to the decision and force

Schmitz laughs, "But often the chapter doesn't want to

accept ideas from either one of these sources." (The
delegates laugh.)
Delegates had a chance to submit problems of their own
which were anonymously exchanged with other delegates,
each having a chance to tackle someone else's problem
and come up with a solution. Questions ranged from "how
to deal with an overbearing house board" to "how to cope
with the "rubber duck' member, the senior who has lost
interest and wants to move out of the house."
Schmitz had a final word for those officers who spend
most of their energy trying to get other members to move.
"A chapter is composed of 15% doers, 70% goers and 15%
dues-payers, he says. If there are any non-dues payers,
Schmitz would kick 'em out. The 15% doers spend 3/4 of
their time trying to get the goers and dues-payers involved,
when really the doers should be out doing whatever it is
themselves!
"Unless you realize what motivates an individual, she
won't do the job. If she's shy, you must accept that you
can't expect much rush help from her. Encourage her. Don't
give up, but don't be surprised if she doesn't come through.
Give her something to do that she's good at.
"Categorize members by their abilities and interests. Ask
them to do first what they like to do. Then they'll do a good
job for you."
Leadership Central delegates spent the second and third
days of the seminar in programs covering rush, finance,
Panhellenic and other aspects of Fraternity operation. The
final evening, LSU Dean of Women M. Margaret Jameson
was guest speaker at dinner.
