Alpha Phi celebrated the Kappa Epsilon chapter March 2-4, 2018 at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia. The weekend kicked off on Friday with the Court of Ivy ceremony. Saturday, March 3, marked the initiation of nearly 200 collegiate members and alumnae initiates at The Foundry. Later that afternoon, UGA Alpha Phi officially became the Kappa Epsilon chapter as it was installed by International President Deana Koonsman Gage (Gamma Iota-Texas Tech) at the Installation Banquet. The chapter included parents’ weekend with the celebration, including a cocktail party on Saturday evening and brunch on Sunday morning. Brunch was held at the Hardman-Sams house, just a few steps away from the chapter’s future home on Milledge Avenue. This coincided with the weekend’s finale—a groundbreaking ceremony, led by House Corporation Board President Linda Gardner Massie (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) and Extension Team Lead Crista Cate Vasina (Delta Gamma-Northern Colorado).
• Built in the mid-1800s by Alfred Long Dearing, the house is a cultural landmark in Athens and is on the National Historic Registry. Originally, a two-story “saltbox,” the Classic Revival portico with Corinthian columns were added after the Wilkins family purchased the house in 1909. Tom and Ann Wilkins began further renovations in 1977, after the home stood empty for 10 years. Tom “handles the nails and large timbers, but Ann did the fine touches.” Their hard work made the house a fixture on Milledge Avenue and having a famous dog statue to guard the yard only adds to the appeal. The statue was so admired by author Margaret Mitchell, that he makes an appearance in the book and film, “Gone With the Wind.” The house remained in the Wilkins family until it was purchased by Alpha Phi in 2017. Alpha Phi enhanced the house with a large addition while staying true to the house’s historic heritage. The Dearing-Wilkins Alpha Phi house officially opened on September 15, 2019. Alpha Phi is honored that Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins entrusted the care of the stunning home to us for the enjoyment of generations of Alpha Phi women.
