On March 22-23, Alpha Phi installed Epsilon Delta, formerly Delta Sigma local sorority of Northern Illinois University, as its 91st collegiate chapter.
Forty-two members of Delta Sigma were initiated into Alpha Phi on Saturday, March 22, by members of Delta Epsilon (Iowa) chapter, assisted by representatives from Gamma Omicron (Drake); Delta Psi (Wisconsin Oshkosh); Gamma Upsilon (Wisconsin Milwaukee); and Delta Kappa (Wisconsin La Crosse). Installation was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A model chapter meeting was conducted that afternoon by collegiates from the visiting chapters. That evening the new initiates were honored at a banquet at the Kiswaukee Country Club. Welcoming the new Alpha Phi chapter to the university community was Dr. Ruth Haddock, Dean of Women. Mary Carr Boyd (Omicron-Missouri) extended Alpha Phi International’s welcome. Kathy Wilcox (Delta Epsilon-Iowa) welcomed the women on behalf of their collegiate sisters.
Patricia Loomis Barrett (Nu-Nebraska), Director of Chapters Central, gave the keynote address. The loving cup ceremony was performed by Elinor Smith Davis (Gamma-DePauw), Director of Fraternity-Campus Relations and NPC Delegate. Janine Stephens Bohm (Beta Epsilon-Arizona), president of the DeKalb alumnae chapter, was toastmistress.
Special guests present were Gladys Risem Waldorf (Pi-North Dakota), District Governor; Suzanne Erickson Wallace (Beta Epsilon-Arizona), State Chairman, and Dorothy Flint Novak (Delta-Epsilon-Iowa), International Consultant on Mothers’ Clubs and Housemothers’ Association.
Services were held for Epsilon Delta at St. Paul’s on Sunday morning. Father Charles H. Brieant conducted the service and addressed his sermon to Alpha Phi.
The charter for Epsilon Delta was signed and then presented to Chapter President Peggy Zimmerman at a reception for parents and friends held at the University Center on Sunday afternoon. Lucia Bannister (Beta-Northwestern) and Doris Corbett (Beta-Northwestern), former executive secretary-treasurer, were among the guests.
• Delta Sigma was founded by five women in 1966. Soon with nineteen members, the women acquired a house. It was always their intention to gain national affiliation.
• The members of Delta Sigma sorority were ribbon pledged to Alpha Phi on November 24. Formal welcoming of the new members took place December 15, with Beta Alpha chapter, University of Illinois, conducting the ceremony.
