On Saturday, March 26, 1955, at two in the afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church of Lubbock, fourteen collegiate and two alumnae members were initiated into Gamma Iota chapter of Alpha Phi by officers of Omega (Texas) and Gamma Eta (North Texas) chapters. An installation banquet was held at the Lubbock Women's Club Saturday night. A total of 107 collegiate and alumnae members from all over the southwest attended. The tables were decorated with the traditional ivy, silver, and Bordeaux. Church services at the First Presbyterian Church were attended by Alpha Phis on Sunday morning. Gamma Iota received its charter at two o'clock, Sunday afternoon, March 27, 1955. Marian Wiley Keys (Alpha-Syracuse), International President, presided at this ceremony which included the traditional signing of the charter. A formal reception was held in the ballroom of the Student Union on the Tech campus immediately following the charter presentation to introduce the new Alpha Phi members to the Texas Tech faculty and friends.
On June 21, 1952, the Board of Directors of the then Texas Technological College, rescinded a resolution passed in June 1924 prohibiting Greek letter fraternities and sororities. In the spring of 1953 the first sororities were installed at Texas Tech. Alpha Phi was the eighth NPC chapter to join the system when they were established on October 27, 1954.
• By the time the Texas Tech Board of Regents rescinded its prohibition on residential fraternity and sorority housing in 1972, the current Texas Tech lodge system had already evolved from the system established by the preceding social clubs. Alpha Phi initially occupied a store front on College Avenue, and then moved to a small white bungalow on 13th Street. In 1958 the Texas Tech Interfraternity Housing Corporation was founded and a 25 acre parcel of land was purchased for $75,000. Each of the 20 participating chapters initially paid $3750 for their share. It was 1969 before the land was platted and streets and utilities added, and the members of the corporations drew for lots and received deeds. The land development brought the total cost of each lot to $7950. Gamma Iota broke ground the spring of 1972 and moved into their new lodge at #1 Greek Circle fall of 1972. Renovations over the years have altered both the interior and exterior of the lodge. Initially built in a contemporary split-level style, subsequent remodeling morphed the lodge to a traditional style and then to the current Spanish Renaissance influenced building, mirroring the architecture of the Texas Tech University campus. The initial 5034 sq. ft. structure has grown with the chapter to now include 10,246 sq. ft. of living space. The beautiful wrought iron doors with the Greek letters representing Alpha Phi that grace the entrance keep with the Spanish influence and have been replicated by Alpha Phi chapters across the country for their own homes.
