Zeta Beta

Loyola Marymount University

May 15th, 1976

Founding Date

On May 15, 1976, Zeta Beta chapter was installed at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Alpha Phi was the first international sorority on campus. A few women were interested in forming a sorority on campus and began by contacting the Panhellenic at UCLA, where they met Sue Riley McGlynn (Beta Delta-UCLA), Alpha Phi Field Secretary. The women met with representatives from several other sororities and then selected Alpha Phi. In February 1976, the first selection took place with sixteen women. Second and third new member selections followed. Inspiration Week was a time no one would forget. On Wednesday everyone journeyed to the Beta Delta chapter house at UCLA for a night of entertainment and songs. Initiation weekend began at the Beta Pi chapter house at USC with the Court of Ivy ceremony Friday evening. The Zeta Beta advisers followed with a model meeting. The evening ended with a great song fest, thanks to the song sheets provided by Beta Pi’s song chairman. The initiation ceremony was held the next morning with Epsilon Upsilon (CSU Northridge) president, Cathy Manisco Juhas (Epsilon Upsilon-CSU Northridge), and all the chapter members doing a beautiful job. The Zeta Beta members thanked everyone hurriedly and rushed back to Loyola Marymount University to rest for an hour until activities resurged. At three o’clock the women and their parents gathered at Huesman Chapel to celebrate Mass for the new chapter and the members. Then came the installation ceremony. Welcoming speeches were given by Nancy Tucker Arneson (Nu-Nebraska), Director of Chapters West; Phyllis Sims Selig (Gamma Delta-Kansas), International President, and Tom Reynolds, the Inter-Fraternity Council adviser at Loyola Marymount. It was an especially warm welcome since Alpha Phi was the first sorority on campus. Zeta Beta joined the Inter-Fraternity Council on campus at the time since there wasn’t a Panhellenic. Then everyone was off to the Hyatt House Hotel for the banquet. Nancy Tucker Arneson (Nu-Nebraska) was toastmistress. Words of welcome to the chapter were given by Sr. Renee Harrangue, RSHM, Loyola Marymount’s Provost; Georgina Campbell Pearce (Beta Upsilon-Oregon State), District Governor; Cathy Manisco Juhas (Epsilon Upsilon-CSU Northridge), president of Epsilon Upsilon; Ann Gorostiza Mann (Beta Pi-USC), president of Beta Pi, and Phyllis Leaverton, State Alumnae Chairman. The response was given by Loretta Slana (Zeta Beta-Loyola Marymount), Zeta Beta chapter president. The main address was given by Phyllis Sims Selig (Gamma Delta-Kansas), International President. The initiates were then introduced by special adviser Sue Riley McGlynn (Beta Delta-UCLA); Connie Purkiss Kelly (Beta Delta-UCLA), District Alumnae Chairman, presented the gifts to the chapter. Joni Hansen (Beta Pi-USC), chapter adviser, acknowledged the gifts, and the Loving Cup Ceremony was conducted by Margaret Donnelly Leonard (Epsilon Theta-Northern Iowa), Field Secretary.
