October 13, 1996, truly was a historical day in the world of Alpha Phi. The Iota Alpha chapter was installed at Pepperdine in Malibu, California.
Installation weekend was a special and exciting time for the 30 initiates. Court of Ivy was conducted in part by chapter members from Epsilon Upsilon (CSU Northridge) and Beta Delta (UCLA). The initiation ceremony took place Sunday morning, followed by a reception at the Woodland Hills Marriott Hotel.
Chapter Adviser Kristie Wright (Eta Kappa-UC Irvine) spoke, as did Greek Adviser Vanessa Reynolds-Nicholas. Sheila Bost from the Pepperdine Volunteer Center accepted a $1,000 check from Sally McCall Grant (Gamma-DePauw), who represented the Alpha Phi Foundation. Participating university representatives were complimentary in describing the high character, integrity and admirable work ethic of the newly initiated Alpha Phis. International President Linda Gardner Massie (Delta Alpha-East Carolina) offered words of wisdom and welcome to the members and formally presented the charter to Chapter President Tara High.
Alpha Phi at Pepperdine was a long time in the making. For at least 10 years Pepperdine groups had been interested in expanding their local status.
Delta Tau Omega, a 26-year old sorority, was the local group that selected Alpha Phi. The Delta Tau Omegas had a long, prestigious history at Pepperdine. Nearly 450 women were initiated into the sorority since its founding in 1969.
