Founding Date

California sunshine flooded the campus of California State University at San Bernardino as the Fraternity installed California’s fifteenth Alpha Phi chapter during the weekend of April 18-19, 1986. Four collegians from Beta Delta chapter at UCLA conducted the Court of Ivy ceremony on Friday evening. They were Paula Lyons Vlaming (Beta Delta-UCLA), Renee Roux Burns (Beta Delta-UCLA), Kendra Kling (Beta Delta-UCLA) and Cathi Ratto Matsumura (Beta Delta-UCLA). Initiation was held on Saturday morning, led by Renee Roux, who was assisted by International President Nancy Wittgen Burks DeVoe (Gamma-DePauw) and Vice-President Alumnae Mary Berkmoes Carroll (Delta Omega-Minnesota State Moorhead). Thirty-four collegians and six alumnae were the proud recipients of shiny Alpha Phi badges. The six alumnae included four mothers of collegians, one sister of a collegian, and the mother of the chapter recruitment adviser.

On Saturday afternoon, a reception was held on the campus to honor the new chapter and initiates. Family and friends were in attendance as well as representatives of the faculty and members of the Alpha Phi Executive Board. Representing Alpha Phi were International President Nancy DeVoe; Vice-President Mary Carroll; Vice-President Finance Diane Spry Straker; Recruitment Administrator and San Bernardino chapter supervisor Sally McCall Grant (Gamma-DePauw); District XIII Alumnae Chairmen Linda Smith Iest and Mary Jo Sigler Tennant; and District XIII Governor Ellen Ericsson Archibald.
